Photo montage by Dawn Ades

I recently looked at the book Photomontage which gave me an insight into the origins of photo montage. I got the following bits of information from the book...

  • The work of John Morrisey consisted of ready made pictures being rephotographed. In 1896 the reproduction from American photography were cut out and pasted together and rephotographed against a prepared background.
  • In the 19th Century it was common to use combination printing to add figures to landscapes and print in different sky.
  • Not all photographers regarded the practice of photomontage as legitimate, the members of the photographic society were banned from exhibiting this kind of images.
  • "Manipulation of the photograph is as old as photography itself."
  • Invention of photomontage was claimed on one hand by dadists Hoch and Hausmann and on the other by George Grosz and John Heartfield
